Massachusetts Public Health chief resigns from position as medical marijuana regulations finalize
As Colorado finalizes its use of medical and general consumer marijuana in the farmland state, Massachusetts begins to reciprocate the same idea in its own system, and one very important public health figure is disagreeing with the decision.
According to the Science Recorder, Dr. Lauren Smith, commissioner of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, will be stepping down from her position as Public Health chief on May 10, 2013 after the state legalizes the use of medical marijuana and regulations regarding its usage.
Dr. Smith was told in an email from Boston.com that "the last seceral months have been difficult for [the] Department of Public Health and for those of us that care deeply about this agency's work in Public Health." Dr. Smith has encountered many issues throughout her short-lived term as chief of Public Health, including a countrywide breakout of fungal meningitis.
