Search for convicted PA embezzler leads to Canada

Wanted Arafat adviser Muhammad Rashid believed to be traveling on Canadian passport, but Ottawa says there is little it can do

The search for Muhammad Rashid, a former adviser and confidante of deceased Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat who was convicted in absentia of embezzling $34 million from the Palestinian Authority, has led to Canada.

According to a report published in The Globe and Mail Monday, the Palestinian Authority has asked Ottawa for help in tracking down Rashid, who has held a Canadian passport since 2003 and who maintains business ties with the country.

armed with hellfire missiles.

OK OK, maybe I'm just a little taken by the cool naming system for US weaponry. Have been ever since the "MX Peacekeeper" days (well, imagine a battery of 50 MIRVs each with 10x300K nuclear warheads aimed at your favorite boogieman! whoo! Talk about being SAFE). The people who come up with such pop-names have to be way altogether gone into it - like totally involved artists.

What I esp. like about the predator/hellfire naming system is that the inhabitants of the countries which get "secretly" (haha) attacked with these things attain to a special kind of bonding experience, which thay can associate with the cool names. Lest they forget, y'know? I couldn't wish for more for the laid-back Canadian citizen than to be recipient of such a thrill. So who knows, maybe this embezzler might prove a turning point - might prove the need for benevolent foreign intervention, since Canada has admitted there's next to nothing it can do.

Any better options?

However, the Canadian government reportedly said there was little it could do to trace Rashid. “Our capacity to assist is limited” because Canada does not have a formal legal-assistance treaty with the Palestinian Authority, The Globe and Mail quoted Canadian Foreign Affairs Department spokeswoman Amanda Reid as saying.

does he have a 'safe house' near Ottawa I wonder ?
