Corexit, Oil Dispersant Used By BP, Is Destroying Gulf Marine Life, Scientists Say

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/25/corexit-bp-oil-dispersant_n_3157080.html

"SNIP......................

A just-released study from the University of South Florida found that underwater plumes of BP oil, dispersed by Corexit, had produced a “massive die-off” of foraminifera, microscopic organisms at the base of the food chain. Other studies show that, as a result of oil and dispersants, plankton have either been killed or have absorbed PAHs before being consumed by other sea creatures.

Hydrocarbon-laden, mutated seafood is not the only legacy left behind by Corexit, many scientists, physicians, environmentalists, fishermen, and Gulf Coast residents contend. Earlier this week, TakePart wrote about Steve Kolian, a researcher and founder of the nonprofit group EcoRigs, whose volunteer scientists and divers seek to preserve offshore oil and gas platforms after production stops, for use as artificial reefs and for alternative energy production.

EcoRigs divers took water and marine life samples at several locations in the months following the blowout. Now, they and countless other Gulf residents are sick, with symptoms resembling something from a sci-fi horror film, including bleeding from the nose, ears, breasts, and even anus. Others complain of cognitive damage, including what one man calls getting “stuck stupid,” when he temporarily cannot move or speak, but can still hear.

“If we are getting sick, then you know the marine life out in the Gulf is too,” Kolian said. The diver and researcher completed an affidavit on human and marine health used in GAP’s report.

Corexit was removed from our approved list in 1998 because it failed a test on use in proximity to rocky shorelines - the detergent prevents limpets etc from attaching to rocks thus making them prey to other sea creatures. Non approval meant it couldn't be used as matter of routine - license of consent for use would be needed from DEFRA and the material used need to come from existing stocks as tested at the time. With no demand on usage those stocks may sit there forever. So - its not illegal which would bar its use completely : its a controlled substance which could be licensed for used dependent on where an event occurred.

The background to the claim that it was illegal in the UK was an NYT article in 2010 which all and sundry copied but never corrected when the NYT removed the article completely presumably in the knowledge that the claim was false or at best a half truth.

Past events here particularly with respect to tanker disasters indicate the public would regard an intact oil slick hitting the coast being the greater evil than the use of dispersants and so I suspect would DEFRA. Others here in the UK may disagree with me on that. For an example of the consequences of a major slick hitting our coasts see here : http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/dec/27/torrey-canyon-oil-spill-guernsey

DEFRA mentioned above is the UK Gov. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

...enough money in the entire oil industry to compensate the people of The Americas for the loss of The Gulf of Mexico, which is what these bastards may have already done, and certainly will if not stopped. At a minimum BP should be broken up - with all shareholders forfeiting sais investment - and their assets sold to h highest bidders with proceeds going to a fund to, at least, attempt to start the recovery efforts...and, by the way, a total ban on current wells and future drilling in The Gulf...period.

I wonder who manufactures Corexit, and what ties, if any, that manufacturer has to British Petroleum or major shareholders of BP. Is this a case of the left hand paying the right hand? Is this a case of cost reduction over performance?
I wonder how, the management of British Petroleum knowing the British government had banned Corexit and why that ban was in place, thought that using it ANYWHERE else might be a good idea.

Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco (owned by Goldman Sachs) of Naperville, Illinois. Corexit is is four times more toxic than oil (oil is toxic at 11 ppm (parts per million), Corexit 9500 at only 2.61ppm).

real culprits are shareholders as corporations sole goal is to make money for shareholders. Shareholders seem to be driving the system as much as CEOs so maybe its time to at the very least name and shame.

With the amount of oil spilled in the B.P., transocean disaster it is amazing that consumers believe,gulf seafood is safe to eat.they have a hard time with second hand smoke,since carcinogenes do not agree with their system.the carcinogenes in gulf seafood must not have that effect because it,the marinelife also has been treated to a good solid diet of corexit.

I've always suspected that the use of Corexit was more of a PR tool than anything. Sink the crude before it got to the coastline where everyone and there dog could see just how much shit was in the Gulf. If that had happened, BP and every other corporate stooge apologist would have been burned at the stake (metaphorically, of course). It was the proverbial "sweep the evidence under the rug", and the people and wildlife of the Gulf will be paying for it for generations.

large wanted the oil not to come on shore because that would make the crisis really real. I can remember at the time there were critics of the dispersant who warned it was not environmentally sound.

BS: Oil Still Leaking From BP Gulf Of Mexico Spill
“Substantial amounts of oil could still be leaking.”

Congressman Ed Markey on CBS - This is a must see in the wake of Newsweek’s investigation. CBS asks the wrong question. The issue isn’t whether the Macondo well and its associated relief wells are secure, but whether oil or gas is seeping from cracks in the seafloor caused either during the initial blowout or the many subsequent failed attempts to cap the well.

============= Editor’s note ================

The government controlled corporate media finally admits what the alternative news reported for years – 100,000s sickened by Corexit whose side effects the Feds helped BP cover up and the well is still leaking.

========================================

Details from CBS…

CBS News has learned that BP is set to embark Thursday on the fifth day of a little-known subsea mission under Coast Guard supervision to look for any new oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The BP oil rig exploded in 2010, killing 11 workers and sending a total estimated 206 million gallons of oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico for three months before it was capped.

In September, a new oil sheen was spotted about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast MORE HERE:
