G8 Blahblah Climate Action Blahblah Efforts "Must Intensify" Blahblah Not On Agenda Blahblah
G8 foreign ministers yesterday reiterated their commitment to driving an acceleration in efforts to tackle climate change, warning that climate impacts will have "dramatic consequences not only on the environment but also on economic prosperity".
The communique issued at the close of the two-day meeting of ministers in London, which precedes the June G8 Summit in Northern Ireland, recognises that climate change is a "contributing factor to increased economic and security risks globally".
It also reiterated the G8's commitment to the long-running UN negotiations, which aim to deliver a new international climate change agreement by 2015, and outlined plans for a new meeting of G8 governments to explore the link between climate change and economic and security risks.
"The G8 agreed to consider means to better respond to this challenge and its associated risks, recalling that international climate policy and sustainable economic development are mutually reinforcing," the communique reads. "Officials from interested G8 countries will meet to consider the potential consequences of climate change and associated environmental and resource stresses as a contributing factor to increased security risks globally, and report to foreign ministers."
