Ferguson, AGs sue to block Trump's rollback of fuel efficiency standards

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, and fellow AGs, on Wednesday filed suit to block the Trump Administration's rollback of federal emission standards for automobiles and light-duty trucks.

The AGs' suit asserts that the decision, by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, violates the federal Clean Air Act, a landmark environmental statute signed into law by Republican President Richard Nixon.

"As climate change grips the world, we should be strengthening emission standards, not rolling them back," said Ferguson."Despite our current public health crisis, the Trump Administration is going full steam ahead on its anti-environmental agenda."

The fuel efficiency standards, worked out with auto manufacturers, were a major environmental accomplishment of the Obama administration. The EPA under Trump has barged ahead with the rollback even though its own estimates, and those of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, say air pollution will increase along with pollution-related deaths, under the Trump administration's new relaxed standards.
