Sixteen female inmates heard their names read aloud and received certificates in an emotional scene. The participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided to them by the Oregon AFL-CIO and their teacher, vocational instructor Jen Netherwood. Upon receiving their certificate, each participant was invited to share a few words. Danelle Klein said she hopes to get her life on the right path when she is released in October:
So many times, Ive been told I cant do anything, said Danelle Klein. This class gave me an opportunity to do something with my life, and to support my kids when I get out.
The program is the brainchild of Oregon AFL-CIO workforce liaison Mark Warne who had created a similar program in Colorado. The organizations partnership with the Department of Corrections is mutually beneficial: the trades get to fill their ranks with young women, much needed in the aging industry, and the Department of Corrections gets to cut down on recidivism. Paroled inmates are less likely to re-offend if they have a path towards a rewarding career.
