Look in electrical or telecommunications supplies for small spools of wiring of a suitable gauge. Wire is very malleable and can be cut to any custom length with kitchen scissors.

I take several twist ties and twist them all together and then sew them into sort of a pocket made out of a strip of cloth. They're holding up well so far.
