"A gut punch:" United Airlines to lay off up to 36,000 U.S. employees in October

United Airlines has been warning employees for months that mass layoffs loom if travel doesn't rebound, and the airline put a grim face on the expected tally Wednesday.

In a memo to employees, the Chicago-based airline said 36,000 employees, or 45% of its frontline workers in the United States and more than a third of its overall workforce of 95,000, face layoffs on or around Oct. 1.The most impacted groups: flight attendants and airport customer service and gate agents, which account for 26,000 of the 36,000.

The airline is calling them involuntary furloughs because most of the affected employees will be eligible to be recalled when travel demand returns under terms of their union contracts.

Airlines are prohibited from laying off workers until Oct. 1 under the payroll protection provisions of the federal CARES Act.

Watch for Southwest to dump thousands in the coming weeks. Same for Delta. Australia is in the Process of Fairing their Airbus 380 fleet to Socal and Arziona as we speak. Once those are in place, more Domestic Planes will be brought in for Moth Balling.

is asking all Pilots over 60 to take Retirement with a special package giving them something like two years pay at their last pay schedule prior to Covid. BTW,if not enough take the bait,it will be offered to 55 and up as per a Acquaintance who has close to thirty years on 777's which are targeted for retirement. This fellow is going to be 61 next month and he is out of their like right now. Got to use up his Sick Time and Vacation days first.

We should all be relieved & cheering this demise of the polluting airlines.
Shouldn't we?

Can't have it both ways, sadly.
