Brazilian state to test Russia's vaccine, eyes buying 50 million doses

BRASILIA (Reuters) - The Brazilian state of Bahia has signed an agreement to conduct Phase 3 clinical trials for Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 and plans to buy 50 million doses to market in Brazil, officials said on Thursday.

Governor Rui Costa said a confidentiality agreement was signed on Tuesday to undertake the trials and Bahia will receive an initial 500 doses as soon as Brazil’s health regulator Anvisa approves the protocol for testing.

Russia has touted Sputnik as the first vaccine against coronavirus to be registered in the world, even though Phase 3 trials have yet to be completed.

Costa said Brazil’s federal government should be doing more to establish international partnerships to help the research on the vaccines that are being developed to fight the pandemic.

If the trials that are expected to start in October are successful, Bahia will look to market the Russian vaccine in Brazil through its pharmaceutical research center Bahiafarma, the state’s health secretary Fabio Vilas-Boas said in a statement.

Bahia is home to the city of Salvador, which, given it's location, was on of the stopping-off ports for bringing slaves from Africa to South America. As such, the population of Bahia is very much of African descent.

The Health Secretary of Bahia may be thinking he's doing his people some good, since Bolsanaro doesn't give a damn about the people of Bahia, but they might literally be guinea pigs.

all of the First Americans who were here....

With those guys it's their pleasure abusing everyone they decide they don't like either from color tone, or social class or religion or political or sexual designation. That gives them so many targets, doesn't it?

Thanks for sharing information that doesn't come easily through our mass media.

This article also reminds us that it took a long, long time to admit previous Tuskegee-like experiments practised upon native Guatemalan people, and it took Barack Obama's administration to do it so very long after it happened:

Government researchers infected patients with syphilis, gonorrhea without their consent in the 1940s

U.S. government medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago.

Many of those infected were encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the study.

About one third of those who were infected never got adequate treatment.

On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius offered extensive apologies for actions taken by the U.S. Public Health Service.

"The sexually transmitted disease inoculation study conducted from 1946-1948 in Guatemala was clearly unethical," according to the joint statement from Clinton and Sebelius. "Although these events occurred more than 64 years ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have occurred under the guise of public health. We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices."

Secretary Clinton called Guatemalan president Alvara Cabellaros Thursday night to reaffirm the importance of the U.S. relationship with the Latin American country. President Barack Obama called Cabellaros Friday afternoon, according to a statement from White House press secretary Robert Gibbs.
