Financial scandals jeopardize Chile presidential race by centre-right candidate

Financial scandals jeopardize Chile presidential race by centre-right candidate
By The Associated Press April 29, 2013 1:07 PM

SANTIAGO, Chile - Financial scandals are threatening to drive a leading contender from Chile's presidential race.

Centre-right politician Laurence Golborne is expected to decide Monday if he will quit the Nov. 17 election.

The former public works minister is best known for leading the 2010 rescue of 33 miners trapped underground in the Atacama desert.

Golborne is a former CEO of retailer Cencosud. The Supreme Court last week fined Cencosud $70 million for increasing its supermarket unit's credit card maintenance fees when he was in charge in 2006.
