Unions laud labour freedoms brought in by Bolivarians

Venezuela is a "beacon of hope" for Britain's workers facing Con-Dem attacks on their rights, trade union leaders said at this weekend's Venezuela Solidarity Campaign (VSC) conference.

VSC national co-ordinator Matt Willgress said right-wing opponents of Venezuela's socialist government have launched "a new attempt to claim there isn't trade union freedom."

But he outlined how the country's new labour law has capped weekly working hours at 40, extended maternity leave for parents, made it harder for employers to sack workers and made solidarity stikes legal.

TUC international spokeswoman Gail Cartmail said: "Trade union rights are enshrined in Venezuela. What have we got? A government urging workers to sell their rights for shares."

Communication Workers Union general secretary Billy Hayes called Venezuela a "beacon of hope for the working class."
