(Reuters) - South American leaders will make a collective show of support for Venezuelan President-elect Nicolas Maduro on Thursday in Lima, officials said, as the United States and his opponents call for a recount of the disputed vote.
Maduro will attend the last-minute meeting of the regional group Unasur in Peru a day before he is to be sworn in on Friday. He was named by late President Hugo Chavez, who died of cancer in March, as his chosen successor.
Protests erupted in Venezuela after Maduro won Sunday's election by a narrow margin of about 2 percentage points, and at least eight people have been killed in violent clashes.
Before boarding a plane to Lima, Maduro said in a televised speech: "In Venezuela we don't have an opposition, we have a permanent conspiracy cheered on by the United States."

(39,909 posts)Venezuela belongs to the Venezuelans.
What they have accomplished in the last 10 years SHAMES the widening of our Wealth Gap, the obvious control of our government by the 1%, and the demands for Austerity for our Working Class and Our Poor while the RICH gorge themselves on their ever increasing piece of the pie.
SHAMES!
They have given us a Blue Print for "change".
VIVA Democracy.
I hope we get some here soon.

Why is so hard to re-count? That is what they are asking .

(3,317 posts)"Re-count": not necessary, not asked for, immaterial with regard to the formal complaint.
100% audit means hundreds of thousands of helpers must invest another few hours of unpaid work, in addition to the time spent on Sunday. There should be a better reason than discontent of a few over losing an election (I don't see millions in the streets). In addition, the opposition leaders are well aware that the outcome will not change, even if every ballot is hand-counted three times over.

The worst spin is by Fox News which puts the like right in their title "Conceding to Opposition Election Council To Audit Venezuela Vote" though they did slip up in one paragraph

(42,239 posts)(Reuters) - Venezuelan President-elect Nicolas Maduro won a collective show of support from South American leaders early on Friday in Lima as his plans to widen an audit of electronic votes helped calm tensions over the disputed election.

Responding to demands by Maduro's rival Henrique Capriles for a recount, Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) said late on Thursday it would audit the 46 percent of electronic votes that remain unchecked. An audit of more than half of votes was carried out on voting day.
"We welcome the decision of the CNE to implement a system that permits a full audit of election results," Unasur said in an official declaration in which it congratulated Maduro on his victory and called on both sides to "reject violent acts that put the social peace of the country at risk".
