The OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, today recognized the victory of Nicolas Maduro to ensure "respect for the decisions taken by the competent authorities", referring to the decision of the National Electoral Council (CNE) president elect proclaim government candidate.
Insulza's statements come after yesterday's harsh criticism by the Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua for having supported the recount demands of opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.
Insulza also today expressed "deep concern" over the "deplorable acts of violence" that left seven people dead in the country and stressed the need for a national "dialogue".

We call on the Venezuelan government to respect the rights of Venezuelan citizens to peaceful assembly and free speech,

We call on the Venezuelan government to respect the rights of Venezuelan citizens to peaceful assembly and free speech, Why? So you can sneak in your Venezuelan Spring? Springtime for Maduro? How dumb do you think people are?
WHAT PART OF AN AUDIT WAS CONDUCTED ON SUNDAY APRIL 14 do those thick heads not understand? Señor Carney, it's not like here where you can play the "hanging chad" game.

"We call on the Venezuelan government to respect the rights of Venezuelan citizens to peaceful assembly and free speech"
"... as long as it is in favor of the establishment", they should add.
The double standard of Washington is as subtle as an elephant.
That was faster than I thought. Great news!
Looks like Elías Jaua put Insulza in his place. I'd love to read what he said.
Catherina
(35,568 posts)he told him without mincing any words that there was an electoral body and electoral laws the opposition could rely on and those didn't include the OAS.
I'll see if I can find that again. Now I want I reread it too.

(35,568 posts)but it just says what I wrote... I'll keep looking but I just read somewhere that the details of the several conversations they had weren't published.
I'm adding it here because I love the way they dealt with Spain. Chavez may be gone but his spirit lives on.

The Venezuelan Government on Monday called Venezuelan Ambassador to Spain Bernardo Álvarez for consultation due to the statements made by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo regarding the presidential election held on April 14.
According to Foreign Minister Elías Jaua, the Spanish minister said, "we have to wait and see who the winner is." But Jaua stressed, "Nicolás Maduro is the winner. He won because of the Venezuelan people's will."
The Venezuelan foreign minister remarked that Álvarez was recalled so that he "comes to Venezuela and explains such statements and the context in which they were issued."
Jaua added that the Venezuelan government reserved the actions that may be taken in the days ahead, if the Spanish government, through its foreign minister, insists on disavowing the election of Nicolás Maduro as Venezuelan president.

García-Margallos comments ignited a sharp response from President-elect Nicolás Maduro who said in a televised address that Spain should concern itself with solving its high unemployment problem, while reminding Madrid that Spain still has investments in Venezuela, despite many companies having pulled out under during the rule of President Hugo Chávez.
The statement issued by the Spanish Foreign Ministrys Office of Diplomacy Information (OID) called the matter a misunderstanding.
Spain apparently jumped ahead of the rest of the European Union in recognizing victory for Maduro, Chávezs designated successor who has been serving as interim leader since the latters death on March 5. EU officials have said that decision is still on hold.

After he heard about Spains change of tune, Maduro praised the Madrid government. Very good, Spanish government, you can count on our working friendship. We are one people and we are going to love and respect one another, the president-elect said during an inauguration of a new medical clinic in Caracas.

(1,954 posts)Every now and then Spain seems to forget their colonial era is over. And whenever that happens they are quickly told to take care of their own business (which they really should, with an unemployment rate reaching 25% of the population...).

(160,524 posts)regarding a predictable fascist-tinged gesture from Spain. They are superb.
Maduro offered further comment as he inaugurated a NEW MEDICAL CLINIC in Caracas. Hope they will get everything put back in order which was destroyed by the opposition zombies.
Found a photo of Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel García-Margallo enjoying a precious moment with his favorite diminuitive fascist, José María Aznar.

(160,524 posts)This is an important moment for Insulza, he needs to move away from allowing the OAS to defer to direction from Washington, D.C.
You have been a powerful resource for those of us who aren't fluent Spanish speakers, and who value the birth of democracy and unity at long last in the Americas, after all these long, long years of brutal domination by outside direction and exploitation of people and resources.
