http://news.yahoo.com/venezuela-violent-protests-chavez-home-state-182818632.html....CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) Violent protests have broken out in the provincial capital of the home state of the late President Hugo Chavez. Police have fired tear gas and plastic bullets at protesters demanding a recount of Sunday's contested presidential election.
National Guard troops and police in riot gear turned back about 2,000 backers of opposition candidate Henrique Capriles in the southwestern state of Barinas. Opposition leaders reported 30 arrests Tuesday. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Capriles' supporters also protested in provincial capitals including Merida and Maracay, denouncing what they call the illegitimate victory of Chavez heir Nicolas Maduro.
In Caracas, Maduro said he would not permit an opposition march that Capriles called for Wednesday in the capital. His chief prosecutor, meanwhile, said seven people had been killed in protests.

(3,747 posts)we need our Democrats to stand up and work actively against the republican agenda of destroying our country.

(2,035 posts)And yes, this government has pretty much ruined everything good about my country, and things are only gonna get worse with Maduro.

(6,837 posts)Maduro's election, therefore one must assume the Obama administration is Republican by their logic.
Chavistas are NOT Democrats. They are unhappy anti-US marxists who live vicariously through corrupt and inept leaders like chavez and Maduro.
Democrats would never support a homophobic lying bigot as president.

(2,035 posts)He himself said it right when we heard the election results that he would allow them to be recounted. But now, he's all of a sudden changed his mind? That sounds a lot like he's trying to hide something. And if you're gonna accuse me of being a right-winger, you'll have to say the same for all those 7.3 million + people that voted against him. He's gonna have it tough now if nearly half of the population does not recognize him as president. He's not gonna last long.

(16,350 posts)We read a lot of bad stuff about Hugo Chavez in this country in our MSM. But I've been following Greg Palast on this subject for years. So maybe Chavez was far from perfect but he did a lot for the poor people of his country and he stood up to Big Oil. That's why our gov't hates him and has tried to overthrow him in a CIA-enabled coup. It makes sense that after his death, we would try to install a gov't that serves our interests.
I don't know the bottom line on Hugo Chavez. I assume it's complicated. But I know enough not to accept the US gov't's propaganda about him at face value.

(16,350 posts)I am not saying we should over look that. Maybe in time he could have been set right. Who knows? He was not a multinational-corporate yes man and that is no negligible thing.
