Military chief dismisses "scandal" about lost ballot box

Major General Wilmer Barrientos, the head of the Operational Strategic Command of the Bolivarian Armed Force (Ceofanb), urged people to use wisdom in reporting alleged electoral wrongdoings. His comment came after a ballot box used in April 14 presidential vote was found abandoned on the street in the state of Barinas, southwest Venezuela, just one day after the election.

Barrientos explained that the ballot box belonged to a polling station in Barinas state. According to Barrientos, the box fell off a truck of the military electoral protection operation Plan República on the way to the corresponding military facility where the electoral material would be stored. Barrientos added that when Plan República was delivering the electoral material at the military base, they realized that a box was missing. A woman found the box.

Barrientos said, "We believe that said event should not be used to disturb people's peace."
