Beyonce and Jay-Z's Cuba trip sanctioned by the US

Beyonce and Jay-Z's Cuba trip sanctioned by the US
Wednesday, 10 April, 2013 [Updated: 05:00]

visit by American pop star Beyonce and rapper husband Jay-Z to Havana last week was a cultural trip that was fully licensed by the US Treasury Department, a source familiar with the itinerary said.

The long-standing US trade embargo against Cuba prevents most Americans from travelling to the communist-led island without a licence granted by the US government.

Three Cuban-American members of Congress, all Republicans from Miami and supporters of a firm stance on Cuba, had asked the Treasury Department for information about what type of licence the couple obtained for their trip.

Beyonce and Jay-Z celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary in Havana and were greeted by big crowds as they strolled through the Cuban capital. The music industry power couple were instantly recognised as celebrities despite the long ideological conflict that separates the two countries.

The source said the trip included visits with Cuban artists and musicians, as well as several nightclubs where live music was performed, and some of the city's best privately run restaurants, known as paladares.

Very confusing. I wonder how this happened (and when).

sanc·tion
/ˈsaNG(k)SHən/
Noun
A threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule.
Verb
Give official permission or approval for (an action).
Synonyms
noun. approval - approbation - endorsement - authorization
verb. approve - confirm - authorize - ratify - affirm - endorse

You can "impose sanctions"--a negative--but if you "sanction" something or someone, it's a positive.

The noun and the verb have opposite meanings. And I've seen the "noun" (negative) used as a "verb." ('The U.S. sanctions Iran.')

Anyway, this caused me to mis-read the title of the article. Now why would I think that it's possible that a Democratic administration would "impose sanctions" on singers going to Cuba, rather than (as was the case) they approved singers going to Cuba? Could it be because they have "sanctioned" the rightwing/military coup in Honduras, where hundreds of labor leaders, teachers, community activists and other advocates of the poor, as well as journalists and other advocates of the truth, are being murdered by rightwing death squads with impunity? Could it be because they have failed to "impose sanctions" on the fascists running Honduras?

It's been very difficult to "read" the Obama administration's policy in Latin America. It seems to veer wildly between right and wrong like the meaning of "sanctions." Initially, Obama said he wanted a policy of "peace, cooperation and respect" in Latin America. But he no sooner said that than the U.S.-funded/trained Honduran military was shooting up the house of the president of Honduras and forcing him onto a plane at gunpoint, with a refueling stop at the U.S. air base in Honduras; and not long after that, the U.S. State Department was running the phoniest election, ever, under martial law, with entities like John McCain's "International Republican Institute" 'monitoring' an alleged 'election' that no reputable election monitoring group on earth would touch, and that most of Latin America refused to recognize. Naturally, the fascists were 'elected' and leftists are getting murdered by the hundreds.

The U.S. should have imposed "sanctions" on the coup regime. Instead, they "sanctioned" the coup.

So that, when I read this headline, I wasn't sure which meaning of "sanctions" was being used. It was equally likely, in my view, that the Obama administration had done the wrong thing. I DO think that there is a struggle going on, within the imperium, with great amounts of "dark matter" influencing things this way and that. For instance--a guess--the CIA, the Miami Mafia and others needed an open route through Honduras for their protected drug lords in Colombia. They needed a fascist regime in Honduras for that. They did the coup, but Obama--taken by surprise, and not instinctively pro-coup--was making "sanction" (disapproval) noises. Enter Sen. Jim DeMint (SC-Diebold) who blackmailed Obama to support the Honduran coup, by holding up all of Obama's LatAm appointments. Obama caved, and H. Clinton set up the phony 'election' as cover.

The benefits to transglobal corporations and war profiteers, of the Honduran coup, is the visible matter--visible, in any case, to those of us who are looking. Call us the Astronomers, with telescopes; the "dark matter" requires Physicists and Mathematicians to ferret it out by inference--it can't be seen but is obviously influential and obviously there. There is an additional "dark matter" cloud around WHY Jim DeMint and his sponsors wanted Bushwhack appointments to remain in place in Latin America--most especially in Colombia--for a certain period of time. Those appointees--especially William Brownfield in Colombia--had a clean-up job to do (Bush Junta crimes and protection of Bush Junta operatives like Alvaro Uribe). Obama then kicked Brownfield upstairs to be "drug czar" of all Latin America. What a joke. I sometimes feel sorry for Obama, given the "dark matter" complications of his presidency.

"Sanctions" is a Roman Catholic Church word, from "sanctity." No wonder it has two meanings. You can order a woman skinned alive for being too uppity a philosopher (Hypatia, 415 A.D.) and then later be declared a "saint" (presumed into Heaven, sitting next to God--Saint Cyril of Alexandria). The Vatican, to this day, is of two minds about "sanctions." Two opposite minds: the one, which imposes severe "sanctions," indeed, on ordinary (non-clergy) "sinners"; the other, which "sanctions" the sins and crimes of the "ordained" ("chosen by God" to be priests). That bipolar mind seems to have infected all of western civilization. Thus, the U.S. "sanctifies" thousands of murders of leftists in Colombia and Honduras, while imposing "sanctions" on Cuba, whose crime is to provide free health care and education to the poor.

Well, Beyonce has certainly got me sounding off. I wish I felt better about why the "dark matter" U.S. government is permitting Obama to do a few "liberal" things about travel to Cuba. (Cuba--which has banned CIA drug rings from the island--would be an even better route to Florida? Transglobal corporations and banksters have got their eye on those pristine beaches?)

Love linguistics. That's how I came across Chomsky decades ago.

Anther english word I love is "table" as in: to table an amendment to a bill. In the US to "table a bill" means to kill it, end it, not under consideration.
In the British parliament (and most all other parliamentary govt's) to "table a bill" means that it has been accepted and put up for a vote.

Loves me my english.

Jay-Z references Cuba trip in song 'Open Letter'
Thursday, April 11, 2013
By: Associated Press

NEW YORK — Jay-Z is defending his recent trip to Cuba in a new song.

The rapper released "Open Letter" Thursday after two Florida Republican lawmakers critical of the trip questioned if the rapper's visit to Havana with wife Beyonce, which coincided with their fifth wedding anniversary, was officially licensed.

On the song, Jay-Z talks about his distaste for politicians and repeats the refrain, "Y'all gon' learn today."
Jay-Z raps: "Want to give me jail time and a fine? Fine, let me commit a real crime."

U.S. Treasury officials said Tuesday the couple's trip was licensed as an educational exchange after Cuban-American U.S. Reps Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart expressed concerns about the trip and wanted to know if it was licensed.

Jay-Z and Beyonce are avid supporters of President Barack Obama. Jay-Z raps in his song, "Obama said, 'Chill, you gon' get me impeached, you don't need this (expletive) anyway, chill with me on the beach."
