Guatemala schools struggle to meet UN goals
Many indigenous communities still lack basic education infrastructure despite UN development goals.

The deadline for improved free education is approaching in Guatemala.
In 2000, the United Nations launched what are known as the Millennium Development Goals, with a target set for April 2015.
For Guatemala, this meant providing free basic primary education. Many indigenous Maya communities, however, still lack basic items such as chairs and textbooks.
While illiteracy has improved and education has become more available since the mid-1990s, many children are also still forced into work instead of attending school.
