boat theftOfficers responded to a call from a security guard at the Scripps research facility on Rosecrans, said San Diego police Lt. Mark Bennett. Apparently a woman had gotten over the fence and was attempting to untie the dock lines from one of their research vessels.
Officers were called to the 200 block of Rosecrans Street about 2 a.m. to take custody of the woman, who had been detained by private security after she attempted to set adrift the vessel named New Horizon, according to San Diego Harbor police Sgt. Joe Parra. Several scientists were sleeping aboard the ship at the time, police said.
It was later determined the female was mentally unstable and was also a missing person at-risk from South Carolina, Parra said in a statement. Officers turned her over to county mental health staff, he said.
