will a cracked screen brick my iphone?

it has been cracked for a while. no additional trauma that i know of, but....
just worked one minute, brick the next.

1. Only if the screen proceeded to fail, or there was further damage inside that failed.

I suppose you held down the power and home button to force shut down, they tried to restart.

2. Not sure. Try a hard reset/restart:

A former supervisor used a well-cracked iPhone 3 for years, still uses it.

However, if yours is done then it's clearly a different matter, two different phones.

I'd try that hard restart, holding down the power and the home keys simultaneously

7. iPhone5 now works with T-mobile, MetroPCS, Sprint, Verizon, I think.

But you have to buy the phone that fits that plan.

but it is a lot more expensive. we have several phones on our account, so.....

9. I switched to a Mobile Share deal with ATT....

for the iPad/iPhone/Macbook running, plus tethering, ATT, seems like a fair price...
