Landscape display of portrait photos and videos

I find the practice of displaying a cell phone picture in portrait orientation with out of focus segments on either side to be rather annoying. This same practice for videos is so distracting that it's unwatchable for me.

Is there a reason this arrangement?

I have wondered what that is. It is annoying to me, also. It adds to a sense of chaos that needs no addition at this time!

IMNSHO not needed ever, especially while we still have Neo-con criminal Republicans around.
Not to open a new rant but, due the prevalence and frequency of occurrence, this is slightly less annoying than dental work with a low speed drill and more annoying than the daylight savings dance.

Thanks for your insight.

I think a picture in the same story prompted my question here. I would find a standard picture of that animal bastard revolting. The out of focus sidebars make it worse, at least for me.

Almost every night my local news out Philly shows a video with the distracting sidebars. Sometimes I look away. Sometimes I shut it off. Perhaps I should write to the producers.

Back in ancient times when I was involved in RTF production, the cardinal sin was dead air/no picture. Maybe this is just a puke-worthy evolution of similar thinking. 'Better to fill all of the screen than leave anything blank, even if it's stupid, distracting and annoying.'

Perhaps younger folks who've grown up with it might object if the practice is ended.

Have a nice day.

However, there is a segment of the population that does not like to see the black bars.

Of course, the correct fix is to properly record the video in landscape mode to start with.....

...had we drained the swamp, we wouldn't be fightin' 'gators.
So do you know any folks that find the black sidebars problematic?

They also complain about movie shapes that don't fit their TV shape resulting in black bars.
I gave up teasing them about it and now just roll my eyes.

I can only please one person per day.
Today is not your day.
Tomorrow is not looking good for you either.
