Tax questions for Whitehall bosses paid over £1,000 a day
Danny Alexander, a Treasury minister, ordered departments to make sure senior civil servants are on the payroll by the end of last August.
He issued the ultimatum amid public outcry that the Government was allowing people to opt legally to pay corporation tax at 20 per cent, rather than income tax at up to 45 per cent.
Despite the Governments claims to be tackling the issue, The Telegraph has established that a chief executive and finance director employed by the Department of Transport are still being paid via personal services companies.
One of them is Michael Holden, chief executive of Directly Operated Rail, which runs the Government-owned East Coast rail franchise.
Last year, the department disclosed the daily rate for his company, Coledale Consulting, is between £1,100 and £1,199 per day with payments of more than £200,000 last year.
