Which Council is yours? My City council (Oxford) is Labour-dominated and reasonable; the Oxfordshire County Council, however, is Tory, and more Thatcherite than Thatcher.

Gateshead is controlled by Labour and we do have a number
of Liberal Democrats mainly situated in the more affluent areas.

From personal experience they still treat the poor and disabled with contempt,
at least here they do unfortunately

by all the cuts in funds allotted to local government.

But admittedly being Labour doesn't preclude people from stomping on the poor and disabled. I turned against Blair long before the Iraq war, when he cut in-work benefits to disabled people.
