2 Petitions to MPs: Vote to stop FIPA

If the Canada-China FIPA is ratified, this extreme and secretive deal would pave the way for a massive natural resource buyout, and allow China’s companies to sue Canadian governments in secret tribunals for unlimited damages, restricting Canadians from making democratic decisions about our economy, environment and energy.1

FIPA is the most sweeping trade deal in a generation, and experts thought Prime Minister Harper would sneak it through Parliament without a vote last November.2,3

Nobody expected your campaign to unite Canadians against FIPA. But, together, we put overwhelming pressure on Conservative MPs, divided their caucus, and the government had to shelve the deal while they try to repair the damage.4

Now, the NDP are holding a vote in Parliament that could stop FIPA. There are deep divisions inside the Conservative benches, and if we create a massive public outcry right now we have a chance to stop this terrible trade deal for good.

ACTION ALERT: Put a stop to the Canada-China FIPA!
Tell your MP to vote YES tomorrow in Parliament
Tomorrow (Thursday, April 18), the NDP will ask Parliament to stop the Canada-China Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (FIPA) from becoming law. Use the form below to send a letter to MPs demanding they support the motion when it comes for a vote in the House of Commons.

The FIPA, one of Harper's worst corporate rights pacts, will give China-based corporations 31 years of "protection" against environmental policies and other government decisions that put people before profits. The FIPA has galvanized people against these excessive investment treaties and thrown the future of the China pact into doubt.

Canada is already the 6th most sued country under similar corporate "rights" in NAFTA. The FIPA with China will lead to more corporate lawsuits like the ones against Quebec's moratorium on fracking, where a US energy firm wants $250 million in "compensation" for the community's right to say no to dangerous natural gas drilling.
