Kaufert hopes for compromise on tribal fishing plans

State Rep. Dean Kaufert tells "UpFront with Mike Gousha" that tribal spearfishing tactics are threatening northern tourism.

“Tourism is a huge business here in the state of Wisconsin. The economic impact is great,” Kaufert, R-Neenah, said on the program produced with WisPolitics.com. “I’ve talked to many resort owners, supper clubs, bar owners, diner owners up north and they are are really scared about what this is going to do.”

The Chippewa tribes said they are going to increase the amount of walleye they take from the ceded territory. According to Kaufert, this use of tribal fishing rights would mean other anglers would have to limit their catch to one walleye a day.

A spearfishing controversy dubbed the “Walleye Wars” erupted in the 1990s. According to Kaufert, an agreement that kept the peace is now being threatened by the tribes.

“[The tribes] are disappointed in things like the mining legislation and the wolf hunt. And it seems to be some push back, and they’re saying because we aren’t getting their way on other issues we are going to take this stance on spear fishing,” Kaufert said.

Kaufert's hoping for a compromise.

“I know that the governor has a pretty good relationship with the tribes. He meets with them regularly so I am hoping that cool heads will prevail and we will get back to where we were,” Kaufert said.

Yes I bet they have been filled with all types of propaganda and racist shit against the tribes

Mining on tribal lands against our own country's federal treaties
Corps rule! Not the Law

"This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land"

The bill gives mining companies the jurisdiction to mine Wisconsin’s land with minimal regulation, including tribal land that is legally supposed to remain untouched and environmentally intact according to federal law.

2. If Kaufert wants to protect tourism, he should attack the mine with everything he's got.

The mine will do infinitely more harm than tribal spearfishing.
