Woodland Park Zoo's oldest gorilla passes away due to severe health decline

The Woodland Park Zoo is mourning the loss of its oldest gorilla, a 50-year-old grandmother that was humanely euthanized Wednesday due to her severe decline in health.

The zoo said Amanda, 50, was struggling with age-related blindness, degenerative issues and decreasing appetite and activity level.

Amanda, the grandmother of the zoo's newest baby gorilla, Kitoko, was the oldest western lowland gorilla living at the zoo and among the oldest in North America.

Zoo officials said female gorillas can live in to their 40s and 50s and 30-35 years in the wild. Amanda was "well into advanced geriratric age," amounting to practically double in human years.
