OLYMPIA, Wash. Critics of Gov. Jay Inslee claim he has overstepped the authority of his office during the COVID-19 pandemic, claims that are the basis of three separate lawsuits that are challenging the governor's stay-home order.
The trio of lawsuits have all been filed by the same attorney who is representing different people, but disputing Inslee on different legal grounds.
The latest lawsuit, a writ of mandamus filed Thursday with the State Supreme Court on behalf of three gym owners and another person claim Inslee violated the state's Constitution by stripping away the liberties of individuals who can still work and earn a living. They say the governor's order forces them to essentially be arrested in their own home.
The Constitution is very clear and Jay Inslee is very outside of it, said attorney Stephen Pidgeon while standing on the steps of the state Supreme Court this week. He is the lawyer who has filed all three lawsuits.

But former state Attorney General Rob McKenna, who ran for governor in 2012, said Inslee is acting within his rights.
The language in the Constitution about the governor is very limited, he said. The power is in the statues passed by the state legislature going back to the 1800s when there were pandemics that killed thousands of people."
