UW to host new NOAA climate research institute
SEATTLE -- The University of Washington has been selected to host a new NOAA research institute, the university and NOAA announced Thursday.
The facility, named the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean and Ecosystem Studies, will include faculty from UW, the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and Oregon State University.
"Members will contribute expertise, research capacity, technological development, help train the next generation of NOAA scientists, and conduct public education and outreach," according to the press release. Part of that outreach will be to "engage and educate the citizenry of the Pacific Northwest, Alaska and the nation about human-caused impacts on ecosystem health and socioeconomic sustainability."
The institute comes with a $300 million award over 5 years with potential for an additional five-year award based on a successful performance.
