Texas
Related: About this forumMore Texas hating going on in GD, I just posted on it.
I have cousin that lives near West on a farm.
He is OK.
The town will come back.

(17,291 posts)Apparently a friend of mine who has a place in Abbot had his windows blown in by the blast.
Spring summer, winter, fall, Texas hating is always in season on DU.

(8,492 posts)Ignore that crap, though. Some people just need to hate for hates sake.
from a Chicagoan (yeah...we get it, too!)

(29,414 posts)I've been trying to counter the hate in LBN today, too. Some will simply never give it up (myself, included, in attempting to defend us.)
I'm they'll rebuild without much issue, and I hope they get all the assistance they need and require, no matter what government agency supplies it.

(18,705 posts)I read your posts in the other thread.
There are just some people here who love to hate.
We do need to fight back when we can.
It is the Bush thing over and over.

(112,121 posts)I made the point that the farmers in the area might be putting food on their table.
I went to college with a lady from West so I'm wondering if she still lived there and if she is okay.

(115,103 posts)You'd think something like this would mean people would naturally ease up on the hate... oh well.

(29,414 posts)compassion only comes with strings attached. "Conditional compassion" and it seems rampant on DU, especially when it comes to helping people in some way.

(115,103 posts)but that's just a small town and there are a lot of people hurting... And I think I can safely say that a whole hell of a lot of people in this state have good memories of the town cause its just one of those places. That Czech Stop is an icon, and everyone is just nice there. The people stopping by, the people behind the counter... It's just nice.
To see all the hate, and have those memories in your head, and all this pain and loss you know so many people are feeling... its just messed up.

(29,414 posts)but the Czech Stop is listed on the Texas Highways site for kolaches. I may have to map out a road-trip to find all the kolache places in Texas. Might make for a good caravan-type trip, too
I was happy to see, too, that Czech Stop kept their bakery going to feed victims and responders. They all sound like nice folk, whatever their voting record may be. I think that is what too many people around here see first and it then negates anything more about that person or people. Look past that, and you might find someone worthy of being called a friend or a good neighbor (at least, that's what I'd say to the haters )

(115,103 posts)The building on the north side has tables so you can take a load off and enjoy your snack or meal off the road.
If you have a sweet tooth you may take a while to make up your mind. The selection is incredible.

(112,121 posts)They think that civilization doesn't exist west of I-45.
Next time that you go to Dallas take the long route on Highways 290 and Texas 6 through Waco and finish the trip going north on I-35 so you can get yourself so kolaches.

(18,705 posts)If anyone wants kolaches a little closer there is the Kountry Bakery, three shops.
Only about 100 miles away, down I-10.
Just visit Hallettsville, Weimer, or Schulenburg.

(29,414 posts)has real kolaches, too. I just bought a loaf of pumpernickel from their Braeswood store, so I can make some veggie reubens tonight

(18,705 posts)Kountry Bakery is like your Grandmother used to make.
I think they will ship them also.

(25,258 posts)I confessed that I piled on a little bit, I requested that Reid put gun control pork in the disaster spending bill. Our elected (R) officials have been just awful and show little desire for democracy in Texas. All they care about are cutting public services and preserving gun rights.
I was very upset about Cornyn's vote on Sandy because he was senator during Ike.
I have no idea if they will need congressional approval as I don't know how much in funds they will need. I don't think it is going to be a huge amount.
I do hope that the funds go directly to the families and the community and not to some corrupt state coffers.
It is a horrific disaster.
