Carrying a switchblade in Texas could become legal if House Bill 1862 manages to get passed during this legislative session.
Switchblades were outlawed in the USA Switchblade Act of 1958. At the time, switchblades were associated with gangsters, thugs and other low-life criminals. Hollywood movies, like James Deans Rebel Without a Cause, put switchblades in a negative light.
Currently, switchblades are in the same legal category as machine guns.
Houston Democratic Rep. Harold Dutton authored the bill. Dutton told the AP that he plans to use the bill to open a larger debate about gun control.

The Constitution does not specify guns or define "arms."
