Fruit cutters sue H-E-B, claim they were underpaid

A lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court alleges that about 80 workers who cut and packaged fruit at H-E-B stores across Texas were paid less than minimum wage and, in some cases, worked as many as 70 hours a week without receiving overtime pay.

San Antonio-based H-E-B, the region’s No. 1 grocer, disputes those claims, saying the fruit cutters were employed by a separate company, Brownsville-based Pastranas Produce.

H-E-B and Pastranas are both named in the lawsuit, according to court documents.

“H-E-B takes great pride in our partners (employees) and we go above and beyond wage and hour laws to support them,” H-E-B said in a written statement. “The plaintiffs involved were not employees of H-E-B.”

Working conditions were good and the pay was excellent. I get the impression they are still a good company to work for.
