Coronavirus in Oregon: 184 new cases, 8 deaths as fatalities hold near record pace
The Oregon Health Authority on Tuesday reported 184 new coronavirus cases and eight more deaths, with fatalities this month holding near last month’s record total.
At least 41 Oregonians have died with COVID-19 in September, according to the newsroom’s database of fatalities tracked by date of death. The state had reported 44 August deaths by this time last month.
It’s unclear what impact the ongoing wildfires will have on the pandemic. State officials say spread could slow because more people are staying home, or cases could increase among people who have been displaced and are living with others.
The state already is seeing a significant decrease in testing, recording a 35% reduction last week according to preliminary data. With fewer people being tested, the percentage of positive tests is now increasing for the first time in more than a month. That’s likely because people who otherwise would test negative aren’t seeking screening while the sickest are still tested.
