FEMA Urges St. Louisans To Buy Flood Insurance

Federal officials are encouraging St. Louis residents to enroll in flood insurance, in anticipation of a potentially severe flood season.

Most homeowners and renters-insurance policies don’t cover flooding, but the Federal Emergency Management Agency offers flood insurance to residents in thousands of U.S. cities, including St. Louis. The program — which dates back to the late 1960s — sets insurance rates based on building location, age and other factors.

Major flood events can occur with little warning, said David Maurstad, chief executive of the FEMA National Flood Insurance Program.

“Where it can rain, it can flood,” he said.

for a winter (record or 2nd most), this was just announced several days or so ago. Also, they announced that the Meramec River is already at flood stage. It's coming and we haven't even gotten to Spring yet.

You shouldn't be able to buy insurance once a threat is already present. Maybe if it is risk adjusted so that the total premiums cover the damage for this particular flood.

If the gov is actually advising it, do it. Even if there is no flooding, it's a lot more likely this year. If you're ever going to buy flood insurance, do it this year.

If they're advising them to buy it for the reason that they won't have to pay out as much if catastrophe strikes?
