Governor Laura Kelly Announces Kansas to Receive $63 Million in FEMA Unemployment Funds

Governor Laura Kelly today announced her administration’s grant application for FEMA’s Lost Wages Assistance program (LWA) received federal approval and an award of $63 million to assist Kansans who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I appreciate the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its quick response to my administration’s application, and for making these funds available to those who need them throughout our state and nation,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “We will work to distribute these dollars as quickly and efficiently as possible to keep Kansas families in their homes and food on their tables. However, it is still critically important for Congress to create a coherent strategy and act on a long-term solution for those who have found themselves unable to work due to the pandemic’s impact on our economy.”

1. Diluting funds from FEMA . . .

is horrible in my opinion. Fires, hurricane, tornadoes, earthquakes, et al., is where the funding is needed.

Republicans in congress could have resolved the issue of unemployment and many other issues with another aid's bill. But they refused to do so.

republicans are the reason why we are in this mess, plus over 189,000 deaths caused by COVID-19. Only the rich is living well.

2. FEMA vs. another Coronavirus Relief package

When Mnuchin first mentioned direct payments, there were two: One in late March, and then he said another one in May, which never came about.

FEMA funds are for natural disasters--fires, floods, hurricanes.

Kansas better hope they aren't hit with a land hurricane/Derecho, or any tornadoes.

Misallocation of funds. The Senate needs to set McTurtle upside down on a fence post out of the way, and subsidize the people who drive the everyday economy. Europe subsidized wages, not corporate "small business" and the stock market.

This is simply draining funds we have earmarked for disasters we can't prevent, not for digging out of Trump-made mismanagement and malfeasance.
