Deputies: Man called 911 because 'his phone told him to'

SPRING HILL --

A Spring Hill man was arrested after a series of events that began after he told deputies he had called 911 because "his phone told him to call," deputies said.

Anthony Edington, 41, is facing charges of violation of probation in connection with the incident, which happened Tuesday at 8:50 p.m.

According to reports, deputies were dispatched to Shannon Avenue to perform a well-being check after receiving a 911 call from a man who had said he was calling because his phone instructed him to do so.

When deputies arrived, they met with Edintgon, who was across the street in a neighbor's driveway. Deputies said they detected the odor of alcohol on Edington's breath.

Edington told deputies that he had just been released from prison and that he was wearing a GPS monitoring device that was malfunctioning, the report said. Edington also told the deputies that he "drank a few beers while he was socializing" at the neighbor's house.

Deputies performed a computer search on Edington and learned that he was on probation, and that as part of his probation, he was not allowed to use alcohol or intoxicants of any type and that he was subject to a mandatory curfew that confined him to his home between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

According to deputies, this meant Edington was in violation of two conditions of his probation.

Edington was arrested and booked into the Hernando County Detention Center, where he remains without bond.
