TAMPA The Tampa Bay Young Republicans want Hillsborough County to get in the line of communities courting a gun accessories manufacturer that plans to leave Colorado because of a new law banning the high-capacity magazines it makes.
Last month, Magpul Industries, based on Boulder, Colo., announced on its Facebook page that it would move its manufacturing operations out of Colorado because of Gov. John Hickenlooper's support for a bill to ban magazines that can hold more than 15 rounds as of July 1. The company makes a half-dozen 20- or 30-round magazines.
"Based on the legal problems and uncertainties in the bill, as well as general principle, we will have no choice but to leave if the governor signs this into law," the company said on its Facebook page on March 18, two days before Hickenlooper signed the law. "We will start our transition out of the state almost immediately, and we will prioritize moving magazine manufacturing operations first."
That announcement has drawn interest from officials in Alaska, Indiana and Wyoming who want to welcome Magpul to their states.
In a letter to the company dated March 27, the Tampa Bay Young Republicans said they, too, hoped that Magpul would consider moving to Hillsborough County. The group touted the shipping facilities available through the Port of Tampa, the county's culturally diverse workforce, the fact that Florida has no income tax, the ability of the bay area's beaches to draw many conferences and conventions and "most importantly, our pro-military and veteran community initiative

I live near Tampa and I need a job. I'd rather eat sand than let a crappy gun company make money here.
