Report Finds Food Insecurity Could Rise By Up To 60% In The D.C. Region Amid The Pandemic
Jacob Fenston

The D.C. region is one of the wealthiest in the nation, with the second-highest median income of any metro area. Still, hundreds of thousands of residents don’t consistently have enough to eat, and the coronavirus pandemic is making the problem much worse. The number of people experiencing food insecurity in D.C. and the surrounding suburbs will rise by 48 to 60%, according to a new report by the Capital Area Food Bank.

Radha Muthiah, the food bank’s president and CEO, called the projected increase “staggering.” In the next year, between 200,000 and 250,000 more people in the region could become food insecure, meaning they would lack consistent access to enough food.

“Yes, food insecurity and inequity were significant problems prior to the pandemic,” says Muthiah. “But what this report really highlights quite visually is that these gaps that we know existed before in our community have widened even further during the course of COVID and the economic downturn.”

Food shortages could reduce our healthcare costs. I recall reading that during depression years of 1930,
Americans generally had fewer heart attacks and strokes and diabetes.

I love to gobble down a whole large pizza in one sitting, but I do not do it because I try to avoid medical expenses and enjoy better health.

Themselves than. You sound like a damn social darwinist.

Let me tell you my experience of why I was fat..

I have an extensive trauma history including sexual abuse. I am also transgendered. And I had to bury that body dysmorphia because people who could have helped me were bigoted and ignorant of the painful issues transgender people go through by no choice of thier own.

I was fat because it protected me from predatory men. Your body holds the memory of the trauma. I have been raped by predatory men as a kid and an adult ,and more than once. But that understanding as to why I was fat for years was not made consiously aware to me.

My mind shielded itself. Until I was ready to deal with this in a safe way. It's an unconscious protective mechanism that is very powerful, based on survival that helped me survive what I went through..so I got fat. Never ate a whole pizza in my life however .

Dieting causes a yo yo syndrome where you lose and gain back more

Everytime you diet and you aren't secure in losing that weight yet you end up being fatter as your base metabolism gets slower. Has to do with how the body deals with starvation. But I doubt you ever researched this issue.

I am near the body weight I need to be now. The weight gave me diabeties.
I did not ask for this. Any more than asking to be raped.

I had to feel safe in my environment enough and had to work through very painful traumas before I began to lose weight.

I live in my apartment by myself because I know I can't handle predatory men, sociopaths authoritarians or narcissists. I can bar them from my space.

And those monsters in human suits are everywhere. If I am around one of these human shaped shitstains I get angry, feel unsafe and want to destroy them all.

Why because of thier selfishness, societies ignorance and lack of empathy. I was left alone and hurt when I needed people to help me or protect me. Since they were not there .I had to do something to protect myself. So I got fat.

You don't get it that sometimes fat is safety mechanism for wounded people literally.

Safety fat is shielding your body from a world full of predatory men. Fatness keeps them from trying to have power over you, stops them from wanting to fuck you rape you and exploit you.And thier fucking enablers do not help. With your opinions you do not help anyone. And the cruel words and behaviors from these pigs and thier godamn enablers cause so much trauma and cause the situations where fat equals safety.

Your additude twords fat people disgusts me..

In it's incredible ignorance.

It said we are 9 missed meals until people have food riots,or we learn on the news someone starving put Moscow Mitch's head on a pike.
Food insecurity worse than what I have now would kill me,because of diabeties.

It's insane how much food they can bulk purchase directly from farmers and wholesalers. It's extra cheap during the pandemic since many restaurant, cafeteria, and overseas buyers have cut back.

Why not put a city wide 20 dollar tax on workers who make 100 grand and above and have that money go to the people who need food. 20 bucks from the wealthy is not a hinderance.

Just drive around the nearby burbs, and you will see mansions after mansion.
