I was senior warden at my church for a couple of years. It would have saddened me to fence off my church, but if I had to do to protect it, I would.

whataboutism will try to trash it some more. Their favorite traitors' statues are being torn down so why not go after a place that is protecting protesters?

It seems protesters are starting to target anything that gets in their way, including buildings that in the past were supportive of the protests. The church was vandalized and was in continuous jeopardy so, while not a fan of fences on public spaces, I understand them trying to protect their property and this historical building.

In Wisconsin, protesters attacked a democratic senator and tore down a statue of an anti-slave civil war activist.

I am all for peaceful protests.

It could be agent provocateurs or bad actors from right wing groups, but we just don't know.
