In L.A. I see no signs of new jobs but I see less places closing = a stalemate ?

(62,683 posts)area. That doesn't mean anything to me because I can't afford to buy one, but my niece and her husband have been trying to buy a house and they keep getting snapped up for over the asking price. They were interested in a particular one and the owner had received twenty offers! That may have been extreme -- great neighborhood, good schools -- but across the board they're selling FAST.

Other than that, things don't ever change much around here. The economy is resource and tourism based being so close to Yosemite.

Looks like the 1 percenters are quite successfully dismantling America and profiteering from it.

(75,480 posts)medical professionals are doing quite well. However, we haven't had any lowering of poverty problems or increase of jobs at the working class level. My county is mostly rural, horse country, and wine country but for every Mc D's job that opens up there are about 200 applicants.

(15,139 posts)empty storefronts and unoccupied office buildings. However, the rich definitely continue to get richer. A new Bentley dealership just opened locally and I see no shortage of other new, expensive vehicles on the road. Sales of McMansions are brisk, too.

(3,998 posts)Lots of Bentleys and Maseratis. Where are these people getting the dough? We've had a few small businesses open here in South Pasadena, and home prices are through the roof. Low supply though. As usual, some people are doing just swell, but lots of others are not.

(36,424 posts)has my property at plus $10,000 from it's lowest since 2008/9, but that is still minus $12,000 from it's high of all time, a little before that time.
Jobs? Can't tell. I'm not in the market right now.
Prices? The inflation numbers are rigged. Every week I pay more & more at the grocery store, but this is not included in inflation figures. WTF? Who doesn't eat?

(106,886 posts)and a lot of remodeling activity on local homes. A vacant supermarket has been picked up by another company, is being remodeled and set to re-open in June/July. A downtown corner property was bought by the local Section 8 / HUD provider and apartment construction is on-going.

(14,549 posts)remodeling going on here. And infrastructure work...maybe it's a Coastal thing...but the economy is picking up here.

(32,342 posts)I don't think I'm in a SES level that is going to feel any recovery though. Gas and food are still high, and the storage rental fee went up 20% on me. Landlady raised her rent too.
Looks like some new spots are coming to our little shopping area though, and the county has been doing massive drain/road upgrades all up and down El Camino for months, so those guys are happy.

It's better than it was 2 years ago when you drove the length of Ventura Blvd past dark and the fancy " bistros " were closed ,there has always been little night life in the Valley but now it's non existent .
here's something I hope only happens in the west valley Domino's pizza being delivered to gated communities and Audi A6s in the drive thru lane at Mc Donalds . and always In & Out burgers. Yikes L.A.

(3,998 posts)Lofts and condos a block from OR right in skid row. More apartments going up on Hill near Temple, and a huge complex in the works in the arts district.

(4,299 posts)Lots of infrastructure improvement, new apartments near colleges, a new person sleeping in their car on our street in Southern California. Haven't seen retail improvement yet, real estate edging up. Personally, still recessionized.

(27 posts)Recent national stats showed an improving manufacturing base, but here in Riverside County the most recent manufacturing stats were dismal. I don't see a lot of economic growth here although certain sectors are reporting an uptick.
