Gas chamber back in California?!?

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]California DUers, you might be interested in what's happening regarding the California death penalty.

While many states are moving towards abolishing the death penalty (like the rest of the civilized world), California State Sen. Joel Anderson (R) has proposed legislation to bring back the gas chamber. Not only that, he wants it to work by suffocation rather than cyanide, displacing oxygen with nonlethal gas. Unbelievably, the California District Attorney's Association supports this bill (SB 779).

SAFE California has a petition opposing this huge step backwards in the administration of justice in our state, as well as a campaign of letters to district attorneys around the state. Please feel free to participate and share.

Oppose Gas Chamber Executions in California!

they are in Masschusetts?

Isn't any bill proposed by a Republican in California's legislature doomed to defeat in committee?

Bottom line: any chance of this bill coming to the floor?

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Our legislature is still very strongly Democratic and, of course, we have Gov. Brown, who would veto any such legislation if it ever had a prayer of passing. I don't know if it will even make it to the floor or not, but I rather doubt it.

But that's not the point. The issue here, in my opinion, is that we have a state association of district attorneys that actually supports this heinous bill.

Public shaming is important in this case. The stronger public opinion becomes against the death penalty in general and against this bill in particular, the sooner we'll get like-minded DAs around the state and the closer we'll get to abolishing the death penalty completely in California.

I am hoping that the execrable nature of the proposed bill keeps it from making it onto the Google site (so I can read it, for instance), but I could not find anything on "SB 799", even when linked to "Anderson", "gas chamber", etc. There is a concurrent bill with that nomenclature which deals with hospitalization for cancer patients. Any clues?

the dumbest thing about the "death penalty " ==== legal murder is that you can only die once.
