CA Unemployment - hung up on the extension

Soooo - I was surprised when I was informed on June 27 that my unemployment claim had been exhausted. I was advised to call the EDD office to ask for an extension on my claim, a claim that had been in effect only from March 1.

So I called on June 29 and spoke to an agent. He looked up my file and was surprised to find I had not been automatically given an extension. He put me on a list to be reviewed and told me to give it 8-10 days.

Well, I called back on Weds and spoke to a different agent, who looked at my file and said I was NOT put on the review list and that the agent I spoke to made no notes of our call on the 29th...which to EDD means there was no call. The agent put me on the list and made notes in the system about our chat.

Getting nervous - I am owed $2020 in UI benefits at this point if I’m put on the extension - I called back today. I spoke to a different agent who confirmed Weds call, confirmed I was on the review list but that no determination had been made. She made some addition to the review list that she said would bump my name to the head of the list, and to give it a “few days” to work its way thru the system. She said no determination had been made to DENY me benefits, and was also surprised that EDD hadn’t granted the extension automatically.

So, still nervous, because the chances of finding a job are nil.

BTW - the call-in to EDD involves spending 15-20 minutes dialing and redialing their number, then hitting “1” and then “0” to get thru the prompts. Eventually the message says to stay on the line, which you do for about 30 minutes until an agent picks up.

4. It's complicated.

I was on UI from 7/29/2018 thru Jan 2019 until my claim was exhausted. That was from a full time job that reported on a W2. I then got a consulting gig that paid me $4000 a month as an independent contractor (IC) for part of 2019 into 2020.

So when CA opened up UI to ICs in April thru the Pandemic Unemployment Act, I applied based on my 2019 IC earnings. I was approved and had a check for benefits going back to 3/1/20 within a week. But at some point in May, EDD went back to my 2018-2019 claim and put me on an “extension” of that claim, which I believe was 13 weeks. That’s the claim that’s now exhausted.

If I understand it now, EDD will now use my 2019 earnings as an IC to figure out my extension. At least I think that's the process.

I'm sorry you're having issues. I'd suggest (if you don't get this resolved) that you call your state representative's office. A friend of mine called hers and somehow she was able to work out whatever her situation was (I don't have the details).

I have some complications that I REALLY need to talk to someone about. I'd be sooo grateful if you could give ne the main number. I also see that you posted the prompts (which just having that is a big deal -so thank you for posting).

I have a few supposedly main numbers but I'm not sure which is the best. What number are you using?

6. This is THE number to call if you want to get thru:

1-833-978-2511

Like I said, press ONE as soon as the number connects and the auto voice comes on, then press ZERO at the next prompt. You'll need to keep cycling thru that process until the prompt after pressing ZERO tells you to "stay on the line, an agent will be with you shortly." Then you get to listen to the bad Muzak for 30 minutes or so. Until you get that prompt, the auto voice will tell you they're too busy to take your call at this time. Ya gotta just keep dialing until you get thru. Oh, and the prompt alternates between a male and female voice sometimes.

8. stopbush, if you have one of the Bank of America cards

where your funds have been going, you may want to immediately transfer the money (I actually go into my bank - which isn't B of A) to your personal account. Over the weekend, some people in Arizona had all of their funds on their cards disappear. I don't have many details, and I'm not sure if it just happened to folks in that state or if it happened other places.

In any case, I hope you're situation is working out..
