A direct deposit was made to my bank account...

and I have no idea where it's from or what it's for

It's not the stimulus deposit (the amount is wrong) and it's not my unemployment payment

Has this happened to anyone else recently?

It's probably a mistaken deposit and it will soon be removed but I thought it was curious

astronomic to get that much. Most insurers are refunding 15-20% of the value of a couple of months worth of payments. My refund, if and when I get it, will be less than $26.

Withdraw it and spend it before they notice! You get to keep bank errors in your favor in Monopoly. We all knew that growing up. These are not the times to quibble over the vagaries of fate my friend..

If its an error you will have to pay it back.
If they can show you purposely diverted it and knew it was an error, then criminal
fraud charges are a possibility.

I thought the Monopoly reference would clearly indicate that I was being facetious. If I have to start using emojis to signal my intent on this site , we are not as wise as we imagine ourselves.

She doesn't pay taxes any more (too old) but her spouse died a year ago so I think she got her husband's $1,200 as well as hers. I told her not to count on keeping it. Mitch will be wanting it back.

The amount she rec'd is closer to what I received, but I'm not in her situation

I guess we have exhausted all possibilities...

21. Retroactive unemployment?
Sat Apr 25, 2020, 10:47 PM
Apr 2020

Initially unemployment benefits did not include the extra $600 per week. But people were eligible for it before it became part of current benefits. Those who should have gotten it from day one but did not will get the missing amount as a retroactive payment. If that included part of a week it would not be a clean multiple of $600.

Things seem rather chaotic at present-- I have questions re my unemployment but I can't contact EDD by phone, nor can I access my account online. Last time I was able to, it did not list the mystery amount nor did my IRS account list it. Weird

But even then (in terms of what you suggested), I can't get the deposit amount to come out right-- I could be overlooking something, but in the absence of actually speaking to an EDD rep, I'm pretty much clueless.

In the meantime, I am ignoring the deposit in question-- smartest thing to do!
