On Safari (in my yard)

I saw a butterfly fluttering around one of our flowering shrubs tonight and wondered if I could snag some photos of it (I have never ever shot a butterfly before, and only shot flowers once or twice).

This is the stray cat we've adopted (she ain't too bright but she's sweet as can be)

And here's a pet I didn't even know we had until tonight. It's a king snake, one of the very most desirable types of snake to have hanging around your yard. Besides being totally harmless to humans and pets, they eat unwanted rodents and also venomous snakes such as copperheads (and we do have copperheads around here).

I've got an agreement with snakes, if they leave me alone I'll leave them alone. And to be honest it's been a long time since I've seen any around here.

The butterfly photo looks 3D. The snake is quite nice as well. Which is not to say the Kittie isn't grand.

I'm lucky to live in N.J. and Sussex County has the largest variety of butterfly species in the U.S.

Our butterfly walks begin on the 18th.

The snake is beautiful, too.

The carpenter bees have showed up in the past few days, I was real tempted to grab a camera and see if I could capture some of those in flight. Had to make a tough choice though, spend some quality time with my wife while both kids were gone for the night, or photograph carpenter bees..... It was a tough call, but the bees lost.

Private time without the kids around, who knows when that will happen again!

Smart move.

Not sure if a snake could be a pet. You could live with it for years and it would still not know you from Adam.

She said spiders were welcome in her home because they ate roach and mosquito eggs.
