into objects From the personally meaningful painting of objects from your childhood like this teddy bear and handmade suitcase to your baseball glove and the pop drinks. They all trigger the viewers’ own childhood experiences and, as I’ve said before that’s a very nice gift because by painting things from your youth you elicit others to think of their youth. It’s all part of the American experience of what might be a quickly vanishing past.

Though the above objects are the past, they are personal, but in painting old buildings you are depicting a different past which is more a rendering of a place in time. It’s also wonderful work showing a feeling for the passage of time in a town. Capturing it with the respect and love you feel is like using a magnet on our attention to draw us to notice something that’s slipping into the past. It’s poetic in a way.

With the vegetables you are bringing our attention to the simplicity of our food by appreciating the many complex shapes and colors of what we eat. You aren’t painting a still life when you do this because there is no place or contrast with anything else on your canvas. No background or tabletop are included. Just the vegetables with their colors, shapes and meaning. Like you’re just going with your own experimental renditions.
