The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWell, that proves there are trolls here.
I suppose this is Meta, but I just discovered that the tales I have heard about agitators signing up to DU to intentionally spread filth are true. I'm rather more tolerant than most here at DU (which is not necessarily a virtue), so I will put up with a lot of posts that many people would alert on in an instant. I have issued one alert in the past, when a poster restarted his thread that had already been locked, but I mostly ignore name-calling and invective, particularly if it happens to be directed at me (sticks and stones, y'know).
But when someone posts, as his first ever post to DU, the statement "black males should be shot down like the animals they are, it's not like they're worth anything anyway," (no sarcasm indication) I think one might reasonably conclude that a line has been crossed. Certainly a violation of the ToS, anyway.
Why anyone would waste his time with such conduct is a mystery to me.

(149,296 posts)The burning question for me: Did you alert?
I imagine that MIRT was on the job pretty quickly!

(17,065 posts)Sure, I alerted. I've been dodging jury duty for most of the primary season, so it was my fist look at the new system. The post was auto-removed. I see there are no notifications to alerters of the results of their alerts, so I'll always wonder if anyone voted to leave (one should hope not!).

(202,970 posts)If it was a long term member, then that's a real problem and, no matter who it was, alerting was the right thing to do. Not everyone understands what MIRT does, and no doubt forgets it's here, LOL, but MIRT takes a close look at anyone suspicious who signs up and if they post something like that, they're removed immediately. Most would be surprised at the number of trolls who attempt to sign up here, but MIRT is always on the job and they rarely get beyond a first post.

(17,065 posts)This person registered at DU expressly for the purpose of spewing that bile. It may well have been MIRT who leaped into action, because the post was "auto-removed" later.

(202,970 posts)Of trolls who sign up here just to disrupt. And some are pretty vile, like the one you saw. There is software that often stops them at the door, but they persist in trying to get around it and when they succeed, that's where MIRT comes in. But MIRT is always on the job and sends them packing ASAP. I'm sorry that you had to read that. And if you ever see anything like that again (which I hope you won't), please don't hesitate to alert. That's what it's for...
