10 AN AMERICAN DREAM, by Norman Mailer.

Non-Fiction

4 MY SHADOW RAN FAST, by Bill Sands.

8 SIXPENCE IN HER SHOE, by Phyllis McGinley.
9 GAMBLERS' MONEY: THE NEW FORCE IN AMERICAN LIFE, by Wallace Turner.
10 STAGESTRUCK, by Maurice Zolotow.

Well, I was only nine at the time, but I'm impressed I only managed to read two of them in 50 years!

BTW, Bel Kaufman died last year at the ripe old age of 103.

I was in high school then. I read a lot, but not best sellers. I read mostly classics and things assigned for my school work.

I did not know about Bel Kaufman. I did read her book at the time.

Thanks for the memories, malthaussen!

...but by God, look how (relatively) grown-up that list is, compared to today. Could you imagine a book like *Herzog* topping today's list? (Though to be fair, I expect the new Harper Lee book to zoom to the top when it's released. So maybe there's some hope for us yet...:-/...)
