My dog's a trooper

So today was the day to give the dog a bath, it being pretty hot here (mid 80s). It's funny how she reacts to this, because I know she actually likes having baths, but she has to act all hesitant for some reason. I don't quite understand it. So I tell her what I'm planning, which of course she already knows, because she's a dog and they just know stuff like this. I point to the bathroom and tell her to go get into the shower, and she gets that hang-dog look, puts her head down, tail between the legs, and slowly walks into the bathroom, looks back at me still pointing and continues into the shower.

Bathing commences, she gets all lathered up and rinsed and repeated, and when we're all done, I ask her to shake in the shower, but will she? No, she will wait until she is in open space in the middle of the bathroom where she can spray the water onto the most surfaces.

Then, the minute she is out, she's jumping around and wagging her tail and smiling like a puppy! So I know she enjoys it, I just know it. She's still happy and it has been a couple of hours.

So what gives? Why the reluctance before and during?

But at least now I have a clean dog. I think it has something to do with Game of Thrones.

Be sure to give her a treat afterwards so she will associate the bath with something pleasant. As far as shaking, she just probably wants to do it somewhere in the open where her shaking won't bump the side of the shower.

and she always gets treats after. I know she enjoys it, I just don't understand why she doesn't realize it before.

But she does it, walks herself into the shower. She's so cute. Dogs are the best.

I've given my cat umpteen baths and not once has she voluntarily entered the bathing arena.

My dog (that my terrible ex stole from me) did the exact same thing, but was a little more reluctant to get in the shower. She loved being clean though. I think I'm basically the same way; too much hippy in my blood.

Do you treat her more sternly when you prepare for her bath?

In fact, I try to make it sound fun and inviting. Maybe she's so smart that she suspects reverse psychology or something?

It's just funny how she acts. When she truly does not want to do something, she won't do it no matter what, so the fact that she actually walks herself into the bathroom and shower tells me that she's ok with it, but wants me to feel as guilty as possible in the process. Who knows. I just find it funny. And endearing, of course. Maybe she knows that.

Now there is some thought behind that, wow. I am convinced our cat goes out in the rain just so he can come back in and get rubbed dry. But faking emotion is pretty sophisticated.
