Magic Man

Magic man 1976

Cold late night so long ago
When I was not so strong you know
A pretty man came to me
Never seen eyes so blue
You know I could not run away
It seemed we'd seen each other in a dream
It seemed like he knew me
He looked right through me, yeah

"Come on home, girl" he said with a smile
"You don't have to love me yet
Let's get high awhile
But try to understand
Try to understand
Try try try to understand
I'm a magic man."

Winter nights we sang in tune
Played inside the months of moon
Never think of never
Let this spell last forever
Summer lover passed to fall
Tried to realize it all
Mama says she's worried
Growing up in a hurry, ooh yeah

"Come on home, girl" mama cried on the phone
"Too soon to lose my baby
and my girl should be at home!"
"But try to understand, try to understand
Try try try to understand
He's a magic man, mama, ooh yeah

"Come on home, girl" he said with a smile
"I cast my spell of love on you, a woman from a child!
But try to understand, ooh try to understand,
Oh yeah try to understand
Try try try to understand ooh no no no no
He's a magic man!" oooh yeah

To me it means licensing your music to other entities (like corporations, for advertising, etc).

And as much as I dislike corporate culture, selling out isn't necessarily a bad thing. Paul McCartney once said that it was a mistake to think of the Beatles as selfless and altruistic. They were very deliberately materialistic. He and Lennon would often say: "Let's write ourselves a swimming pool!"

I'm sure there are lots of starving musicians out there who would love the chance to sell out.

never compromised their principles, and still make bland, boring music.

Many "old rockers" got miffed when The Who songs became the title song for CSI.
But as folks were told back when a lot of people started, Beatles included the musicians knew nothing about copy write laws.
Nothing pays the bills like a top 40 hit. lol
Selling out to me implies a whole different connotation.

From Songfacts:
The Wilson sisters revealed in various interviews that the song was about Heart's anger towards an ad Mushroom Records placed in trade publications implying that the Ann and Nancy were lesbians having an affair (see the full ad and read more about it). The song focuses on Ann's rage towards a promoter who came up to her after a concert in Detroit asking how her "lover" was. She initially thought he was talking about her then boyfriend - band member Michael Fisher. After he revealed he was talking about her sister Nancy Wilson, Ann became angry and went back to her hotel room to write the song. Nancy put suitably angry music to the words to complete the song comparing the sleazy side of music to a dangerous fish.

Sony BMG sends cease-and-desist notice to McCain campaign over 'Barracuda' song
The Republicans played the Heart’s hit song “Barracuda” as a shout-out to Sarah Palin. Only problem is the McCain campaign didn’t ask permission to play the song either from Ann and Nancy Wilson or from their publishers.
