1. It was made on a pretty low budget.

The misogyny is palpable. And since my first exposure to James Bond was with Roger Moore in the 70's, I never did get used to the 60's version of the gun-barrel tracking shot showing Bond wearing a bowler hat.

2. Yeah, the women-as-ornaments schtick is hard to watch

Though of course we have our own version of that phenomenon today. Still, it's painful to see it protrayed so blatantly and so shamelessly. I can't even watch the Connery or Moore films anymore because of it.

I think that the first Bond film I saw was The Spy Who Loved Me some time in the 70s on TV, but I'm not sure.

3. Yeah, the Connery and Moore Bonds are practically unwatchable these days.

I know Connery has his advocates; many of them. But my favorite Bond is Daniel Craig. No question about it.

Vesper: "How was your lamb?"

Bond: "Skewered. One sympathizes."

Craig has entirely re-invented the character for the better, aided by sharp writing and Judi Dench's magnificent performance as M.

He is my least favorite Bond (aside from George Lazenby). Great body, but utterly unattractive and not believable as a spy. Roger Moore was too old, although I do like some of his Bond movies. Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were pretty good.

But far and away the best Bond was Sean Connery. The others don't even compare, and Dr. No was one of his best Bond movies, a real classic. If it's on TV I have to watch, no matter that I've seen it too many times to count (didn't know it was on last night, and reading your post made me catch my breath in disappointment!). Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever... all timeless classics.

Clearly, tastes in Bond films vary.

It's amazing that I didn't develop some serious complications due to eyestrain as I was desperately
trying to see if Ursula Andress was actually naked behind that translucent screen when they were
being decontaminated.

There are a few, shall we say, "social conventions" however that would not fly at all today.
