Of the eight "acronyms" you linked to, only the two that form words are actually acronyms.

An acronym has to form a word. Otherwise it is just an abbreviation. I do not think that you understand what an acronym is. It seems to be a very common misconception.

My brain is telling me: -nym is name, and scuzzy qualifies as the name of that thing, so yeah, it's an acronym.

But sometimes, even when my brain gets to the right answer, it got there by taking the wrong road, so you might not want to quote me on that...lol.

People just insist upon inaccuracy.

I have always pronounced SCSI the way that Apple does not care for so yes that makes it a word.

Just because many people believe something does not make it true. Even in the internet era.

Awful used to mean 'deserving of awe', for example.

Once every ten years, the Merriam- Webster dictionary is updated. Their 11th edition for 2003 included some 10,000 new words along with 100,000 new meanings to words already existing and some 225,00 revised definitions.

Lived in the DC area for years. At the National Arboretum, they used to (probably still do) have a daffodil walk, for lack of a better term, through a wooded area with a lot of ferns and ivies. Wonderful, a week or two after the tulips (lots of tulips in DC) would peak.

Peonies too! Lucky you.

I used to shoot a lot of film (before the digital era) at this time of year. Took a "normal", a small telephoto, and two macros - one normal and one long. With a tripod. The stuff weighed a ton. You could go there every week from early spring through early summer and catch something else in bloom. Plus the national bonsai collection. Probably the only thing I miss about DC these days, except the bars and expense account restaurants.

Apr 2013

They pretty well begin to peter out around DC.

Was in a wedding, as a favor to an old friend, in upstate NY a number of years ago. I seem to recall the latter half of May. Anyway, as one drove north from DC, the most obvious harbinger of spring were the redbuds. Which got nicer and nicer as oen headed north.

Not a bad looking tree / bush even when they are out of bloom.

I have a few magnolias at my current abode. (For a retirement type community, I have a large lot. Just shy of half an acre.) They are all about ten years away from being wonderful. They are all the southern, grandiflora type. The Nat'l Arboretum has an entire section, a few acres, of various types of magnolias. They, too, take their time coming in during spring.

Sun Apr 28, 2013, 07:28 PM

Of these, only WIMP ("weakly interacting massive particle&quot is a acronym in the strict sense. It is also a backronym, showing that physicists have a sense of humor.

WLOGA & QCD stand for "without loss of generality assume" (math jargon) and "quantum chromodynamics" (physics jargon).

Speaking of backronyms, let's not forget USA PATRIOT, which stands for either “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism" or "Usual Suspects Alert: Politicians Attacking Traditional Rights Instead Of Terrorists", depending on whom you ask. (I prefer the latter.)
