Couldn't sleep, was channel surfing, and came upon The Joy of Painting on PBS.
I'm still awake, but Bob's soothing voice put me in a very mellow state. I read that after all the yelling during his Air Force service, he vowed never to raise his voice again.
He talked about a baby robin he rescued, raised and released when it was ready.
Doesn't matter if you liked his paintings (he gave all of them to PBS), but he had a kind heart for animals.

(10,419 posts)It ran on PBS for 10 years, ending only because Bob was too ill to continue. He died in 1994.
All the time he painted on air he'd talk about how you at home should paint what you wanted for your own personal pleasure and he'd include stories about the birds and animals he'd adopted over the years (including the chickens on his farm when he was young, which he couldn't eat because they were his friends). It was a great show.

(41,930 posts)That voice just brings your blood pressure right down. And though I wouldn't call it high art, it was fun seeing those happy little trees and clouds emerge from that palette knife.

(942 posts)I love that they still put his shows. Such a nice man. Always makes the day better when I find him on TV.

(66,274 posts)Don't have the slightest interest in oil painting, but I would watch the show whenever it was on.
The guy was centered. He made the world a better place.
I miss him.

(10,129 posts)well, ok.. not really the "complete" set all in one, because he was on for so long, he did so many different episodes.. but Amazon has a crap-ton of different sets for him...

(2,684 posts)I always used to think STOP there, your done with the painting, but as usual he added only what was meant to be there.
IIRC, I may need a little help here, he took over the show format after Bill Alexender's "The Magic World of Oil Painting" and his great mighty paintbrush(?).

(15,933 posts)He'd be on at 12:30am as I lay on the couch getting ready for bed and after 10 minutes of listening to his soothing voice I'd be off in the land of happy little clouds.

It was fun and I was happy with my painting.
My grandma had dozens of pictures she painted along with Bob. I probably picked up the interest from her.
